Love is Like a Loaf of Burnt Toast

Home » General » Love is Like a Loaf of Burnt Toast

When I was but a pig-tailed bossy little girl, I had made a huge life decision. I was NEVER going to be a mom. All because I refused to accept the responsibility of eating the burnt toast. You know, there is always one piece the toaster or oven chars a bit when you make a big batch. That was the piece my mom ALWAYS ate.

She swore she liked it.
She also swore she like the end of the loaf nasty crust piece too.
I never believed her. I just thought she had to eat the one no one else would- because of her mom-dom status.
So here I am. Mom of four little beautiful kiddos. That life-choice to avoid motherhood was overwhelmed by the thought how fun it would be to pick baby bedding and paint giant polka dots and trees on a nursery wall. Motherhood has (surprisingly!!) been much more than that. It has challenged just about everything I knew prior to the year 2004 when my oldest was born.
For one thing I now know why a mom eats the burnt toast. Here goes:
1. Because if I eat it, that may mean one fewer trip to the store at 10:00 at night because we ran out of bread before the week was up.
2. Because I took the time to make the toast and my time is money. Well, maybe I don’t actually make money, but I should- I certainly couldn’t afford to hire people to do all this stuff all day!
3. Because it’s easier to eat the burnt piece than scrape the charred crust over the sink, thereby making a mess I would only have to clean up later.
And finally:
4. Because motherhood has brought me to the place of accepting that what is less than perfect is often the very best thing for me. And I am choosing to like it. Maybe that is what my mom always meant.

You know burnt toast is carcinogenic. Throw it away! Eat banana peels instead. And then give Morgan a kiss!
