a heart of courage

Home » General » a heart of courage

We sat on the sofa this morning and read the story of Bartimeus, the blind man who called out to Jesus for mercy.

“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. Oh, how I love my Lord for asking that.

I looked at my birthday boy, my child of the storm, and I asked him Jesus’ question. What would he like from God?

“Courage,” the word sounded out, steady and confident from the lips of my son.

And the deep ache and joy of loving him throbs in my own chest. I can’t explain it, but I know in the core of my being that he is destined for a life that requires courage.

I push the future back into its place. Tomorrow belongs in the hand of the One who writes our days.

Then I pray for my son, asking God to make him brave-hearted. I speak faith to obey and stand up for righteousness over this future man. I ask God for a special birthday gift this year, the gift of courage, and I feel God’s great delight in His son.

Happy birthday to my third boy, the one that I longed for for nine months, the son who has come to heal my heart with his own courageous love, my storm baby, my Jase. My love for you has taught me many things, but your love for me has taught me more.

Your daddy and mama love you, brave one, and so does God. Be strong and courageous, tie your heart around our brave Savior’s example, and see what He will do for you!
